BoTree wins 10 new stars at Great Taste Awards 2023

We're honoured that our seasonings got once again recognised for their uniqueness, their fine taste and superior quality. We’ve received 10 stars across several different single origin spices (including a semi-secret Kampot pepper seasoning that has not been launched yet!), taking the total number of stars for BoTree’s products to 57.

Judges from the Guild of Fine Foods recognised all new 2023 additions to our pantry (our two paprikas and the spices from Grenada) and revisited an old classic, our Herbs de Kampot. Here are all the details about the BoTree Great Taste Awards 2023 winners:

⭐⭐ Herbs de Kampot

2 Star Award: Outstanding

You’ve all heard of Herbs de Provence, well now it’s time to meet Herbs de Kampot. An exquisite blend of herbs, spices, Kampot pepper and Fleur de Sel giving you the ultimate seasoning companion.

Judges Comments:

“This is a pretty and attractive blend of herbs and spices, which is aromatic and enticing. It has attitude and punch. There are many layers of flavour which develop and dissipate. There is some powerful heat, intense sour notes and warm tones. The salt threads through it all well - balancing out the bullies and moderating the blend. Clever stuff.”

“A varied blend with a complex flavour and aroma. There is heat and fragrance from the pepper, with layers of interest underneath, good quality spices and everything really well balanced with the salt. This has been put together with thought.”

“A bold aroma from this little pot of spice - led by pepper, cloves and other warming spices. On the palate the pepper is perfumed and fragrant - the other spices back up the heat, there are layers of spice, warmth, slightly numbing clove and with a sweet salty back note underpinning the whole.”

⭐⭐ Grenada Gold nutmeg

Judges Comments:

“These are well-dried nutmegs, freshly grated and neat, aromatic - exotically so. They certainly relay a wealth of flavour on the palate and are clearly bright and piquant in impact.”

“Once we grate the nutmeg the aromas that are released are truly stunning. There are warm sweet spice notes along with a beautiful fragrance that lingers as we taste and enjoy the purity of this nutmeg from Grenada. This shows Mother Nature and your harvesting at its best.”

“Such fresh perfumed aroma! Light and fluffy, but the flavour is incredible - so aromatic and again perfumed. There is a real depth and warmth in flavour with a citrus, grapefruit, flavour! It would liven and add excite any dish it is added to.”

⭐⭐ Caribbean Bay Leaves

2 Star Award: Outstanding

Judges Comments:

“These dusky green leaves pack real flavour. When sucked, you get a wonderfully rounded, intensely green, herbaceous flavour and smell. We then tasted them infused in warm milk adjusted to room temperature - and the flavours were absolutely beguiling. The leaves give a gently spiced fragrance and flavour that are 3D in the nose and mouth. The flavour journey you go on when you taste the infused bay leaves is really special.”

“This is beautifully prepared bay with a perfumed aroma. It is very strong in flavour, floral and, again, perfumed. It is lovely and would add character to many a dish.”

“We adore the delicate leaf, and the aroma that is released when rubbing the leaf between the palms, the scents of bay and almost-clove are stunning. Tasting the leaf in the warm milk, there are clean flavours of bay, clove and delicate spiced medicinal notes too.”

2 Star Award: Outstanding

Judges Comments:

“This is an attractive, olive green pepper mix - once ground, the pepper blend was distinctive with a good hit of pepper and salt. The pepper element was fresh and lively and long lasting. We felt this would be great to elevate and complement many dishes.”

Even, well-dried peppercorns. The aroma on grinding is resonant. Certainly salty on the palate but the zestiness and heat of the pepper subsume this to work in pleasing tandem. The heat is marked and persistent, but the flavour well worth the slight shock to the palate. We are sampling neat, in uncompromising fashion, but can imagine that these would work very well in a wide variety of culinary contexts.

This pepper is fragrant and almost herbal in aroma. We really liked the addition of the fleur de sel and felt it tempered the flavour. An initial gentleness in the mouth leads to a fiery aftertaste. There is a herbal note to the taste that we enjoyed.

⭐ Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika

1 Star Award: Simply Delicious

Judges Comments:

“What a great colour, rich and a finely ground powder. In the mouth, this works exactly as described - it is hot but it teases in that it does not overstep the mark, and the long finish delivers an interesting and complex warm, almost hot finish. What a clever product.”

“This is a hugely vibrant pepper - both visually and on the palate. It tastes fresh and the residual heat is satisfying and uplifting.”

⭐ Noble Sweet Paprika

1 Star Award: Simply Delicious

Judges Comments:

“This has a bright orange colour and is a fine powder, uniform in particle size. It is sweet and vibrant. We also tasted this with fried chicken and a little salt, and found the flavour was elevated.”

“This paprika has a really vibrant colour and an earthy, nutty flavour that we really enjoyed. It will complement meats bringing another level to the flavour. We really liked this.”
